St. John Armenian Church of Hollywood Raises $1.5 Million

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kalaydjian Donate $350,000

HOLLYWOOD – During a fund raising banquet on Sunday, June 10 at Taglyan Hall in Hollywood, $1.5 million was raised (donations and pledges) for the constrictions of a new church, on vine and Lexington, under the auspices His eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese.

The event took place at the beautiful Taglyan Hall where a large crowd had gathered to help the parish and community of Sourp Garabed (St. John Church of Hollywood) Church to build a new sanctuary to meet the needs of the parish and the Hollywood community.

Present at the banquet was also His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, former Primate, during whose time 40 years ago, the church was purchased and served the parish. Several clergymen had served as parish priest and the present one. Rev. Archpriest Manoog Markaryan, has been serving diligently and with complete devotion. The banquet was sponsored and underwritten by philanthropists Drs. Petros and Karine Taglyan, who have also donated the Taglyan Cultural Center adjacent to the church as well as one of the buildings and supported other projects at Tekeyan Cultural Association Arshag Dickranian Armenian School a few feet away from the church.

One of the founders of St. John Church, Sarkis Der Sarkissian served as the chairman of the banquet committee and worked diligently with his committee to raise funds.

The program included remarks by the Parish Council chairman Hovaness Tavityan, Committee chairman Sarlis Der Sarkissian, and the architect Vartan Jangozian,who has worked for several years on the project and the church will have several characteristics of the Church of Ani. The hardworking parish priest, Rev. Markaryan, had the interesting idea to bring a piece of a cross stone (khach-kar) to be placed in the church.

The program included a film presentation about the story of St, John Church prepared by the renowned artist Harutyun Fotulyan and a bouquet of songs by the Church choir.

Fr. Manoug Markarian gave an emotional talk and conducted the fundraising, stated that according to the Law, “No one should appear with an empty hand in front of the Lord. Each person should give according to his ability.”

In closing, Abp. Hovnan Derderian gave his blessing and praised the work of the parish priest Fr. Manoug, and specially thanked Drs.Petros and Karine Taglyan for being the Godfathers of the new sanctuary.

Among the large donors are Mr. and Mrs. Kevork Termenjyan who will pay for the construction of the dome.
